David Moore is regarded in Brisbane’s foodie circles as a devout, inventive businessman with a passion for all things hospitality. He used to own and run Drift, which tragically was destroyed in the 2011 floods. David tells of how he came so close to saving his beloved restaurant.
“It was designed for the ’74 floods, but for that to happen, we needed to cut the walkways. We had one more cut of the walkways. The building itself was listing about 6 feet on its side, and that’s when the state government and police took possession of the building and said, ‘No.’”
Since then, David has regained his mojo and now heads up OMG Decadent Donuts. From restaurant to doughnuts, David has developed an array of flavoured, natural fruit sugars to go with his gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free doughnuts. So they’re (basically) healthy!
David says the idea came to him after buying a cinnamon doughnut from a local market at West End in Brisbane. He sources raw sugar from Bundaberg, dehydrates fresh fruit and presto – you’ve got an OMG Decadent Donut!
What started as a little business, selling from a tent at a Brisbane City market stall, has now expanded nationwide. David says as happy as he is that his business is flourishing, he really sees it as a way that he can help young families, or even semi-retired couples, make their first leap into the world of business ownership.
“We got a lot of people requesting, visiting us at the markets asking, ‘When are you coming to Sydney? When are you coming to Melbourne?’ For us, it was just a great way we could concept the business and to pay it forward to help other people. So that’s the whole premise — from our perspective now — about the business… is to help others; not so much for us to make doughnuts.”
