Thousands of Queenslanders wake up every weekday morning with Kip Wightman.
He’s one third of the NOVA 106.9 Breakfast Team – a gig that crowns a radio career of close to 25 years.
Making the move to Queensland Weekender was seamless for Kip (he’s got the weekends off, after all) and he brings an ‘everyman’ quality to his stories – tackling everything we throw at him with a self-effacing sense of humour.
When he’s not presenting for the show or piloting the airwaves, Kip hangs out with his lovely wife Amber and their two fur babies, a ‘Jug’ (Pug-Jack Russell cross) named Sukiyaki and a Dachshund cross called Pancho.
They also love taking their fishing boat over to Moreton Island (Kip and Amber, not the dogs).
What’s something people wouldn’t know about you?
“My favourite studio interview was with Hugh Jackman – great guy – and I bonded with Macklemore (the American rapper) over our mutual love of Crocs – not the animal, the uncool shoe.”
“I was prop forward and captain of my high school rugby team as well as lead actor in the Year 12 school play.”
What image sums up Queensland for you?
“There’s a huge mango tree next door to us and, when it fruits, the birds and bats have a field day – especially at sunset. The sounds, the smells…it’s just… home.”
