Capricorn Coast & Southern Great Barrier Reef: 4-Day Itinerary

Sitting under the Tropic of Capricorn, for which it is named, the Capricorn Coast is a stunning and exciting tourism hotspot, that’s a little off the beaten track of normal holiday destinations.

Sweeping along the Pacific Ocean at Central Queensland just a 30-minute drive from the Beef Capital of Australia, Rockhampton, and only 600 kilometres from Brisbane, it is a destination to be explored and admired over multiple days.

DAY 1 – Rockhampton

Fly, train or drive in. Head for the city centre, where the Fitzroy River flows through town. Get on board with Get Hooked Fishing Charters and angle for a metre barra or king threadfin. Lunch is best enjoyed in the newest addition to the town’s thriving entertainment scene – Headricks Lane. Enjoy an ale or two and retire to the Empire apartment hotel, a luxurious boutique in the heart of Rockhampton.

DAY 2 – Yeppoon

Travel 45 minutes out of Rockhampton for the coastline and you’re met with a relaxed, beachy seaside village that oozes charm. Take a walk along the recently developed foreshore where local artists have taken a brush to brighten its parklands. Don’t forget your togs – take a dip in the Yeppoon Lagoon’s stunning pools and enjoy a coffee in the local café. Enjoy the view a little longer, perched from the Salt Apartments.

DAY 3 – Capricorn Caves

Take a walk on the wild side and traverse a set of limestone caves. A popular tourist destination and not hard to see why, it’s natural beauty is awesome in its own right.  Adventurists and those not claustrophobic should take a caving tour – twisting and winding your way through the maze of caves.

DAY 4 – Great Keppel Island

Departing Rosslyn Bay Marina, take a 30-minute ferry to white sands, blue skies and clear waters. Great Keppel Island Hideaway is a relaxed destination for those who like their holidays a little more grassroots. There’s sand only metres away from the accommodation and self-contained units with views of the 13 other islands in the group. Head out with Great Keppel Island Watersports and Activities for a kayak, snorkel over fringing reefs or go for a fish around one of the many secluded spots on the island.
